JP speaks on injury woe - exclusive

The winger was arguably Wednesday's most consistent performer during the promotion year but nearly missed out on the day out at Cardiff with a back problem.

Since then, a culmination of niggles has hampered his progress and he only started his first league game at the weekend against Crewe but the former Celtic and Livingstone star wants to prove his fitness so he can continue to be an integral part of the squad.

McGovern has been seen at away games and in the stands at home game cheering The Owls on but now has his sights set on regaining his fitness and making sure Wednesday stay in the championship.

"It's been very disappointing for me this season," he told Footymad. "To play so many games last year and then this year have the injuries that I have had but hopefully I can help the team making sure they stay safe this year, because at the end of the day, the team is more important.

"It's been difficult watching from the stands but you just want to stay part of it and that's one way of doing it. But I have bought a flat in Sheffield, my girlfriend's from there so I am quite settled so there is no reason for me to move so I am more than happy to stay here.

"I felt alright against Crewe. I don't think I started the game well. I like to get the ball and keep it sometimes, I made a few runs but didn't really get on to much but everything seems to be holding up fine at the moment so I am quite happy with it. I have to take everything one day at a time and just see what happens. At the end of the day what happens to me in the summer is out of my hands: I just have to do my best and what happens after that is up to the manager."

McGovern is one of the bigger personalities in the dressing room and it is understandable to assume the likeable Scotsman's mood could have been down at times but he reveals that he is looking on the positive side again.

He said: "During the lay-off I have been quite bubbly, quite alright actually. The first couple of weeks are the hardest when you are trying to get your head round the situation that you will be out for a long time. Obviously now during training I am buzzing when I get on the pitch because it is nice to be there and you appreciate it a lot more when you do finally get there.

"I think I may have jinxed the team since I came back in! You wait so long to get back and play and you do finally get in but the team as a whole don't play and it is frustrating. I think we can stay up though, there's no doubt about that. We have four games left and 12 points to play for so hopefully a few more wins should be enough."
