Sheffield Wednesday have made their second loan signing of the week with the acquisition of Scunthorpe United defender Rob Jones. Clearly exasperated by his team’s poor defensive performances, Gary Megson moved to bring in Danny Batth from Wolves yesterday and the Owls have now swooped for Jones.
With Mark Beevers having picked up an injury on Tuesday and Lewis Buxton yet to return from a hamstring problem Wednesday are short on numbers at centre-back and have been finding clean sheets hard to come by.
At 6’ 7” Jones cuts a towering figure and has plenty of experience at various levels of the game. He began his league career at Stockport before moving onto Grimsby after a brief loan spell at Macclesfield and then moved north of the border to Hibernian where he captained the Edinburgh side, making over 100 appearances for the club.
Jones moved to Scunthorpe in June 2009 for what was then a club record fee but much of his time at Glanford Park has been hampered by injuries. The 31-year-old has made 16 1st team appearances for the Iron this season, scoring 1 goal and joins the ranks at Hillsborough until the end of the current season.
