Hills smells success - exclusive

The former Gillingham left-back signed a two-year deal last week and played for 90 minutes against Sheffield FC on Tuesday and came on as a sub in the 1-0 win over Stocksbridge Park Steels last night - a victory courtesy of a Chris Brunt free-kick.

New boys Drissa Diallo and Graham Coughlan both featured in a young squad in Wednesday's second friendly of the summer but already Hills is looking towards bigger and better things.

He told Footymad: "These fans want Wednesday to get back into the Premiership as soon as possible so we have to get off to a good start. The club will still be confident after what happened last year but it is a very tough league, I have played in it for the last couple of seasons and any team can beat another on a given day – I feel if we can take our chances in front of goal, we are solid enough and we should be alright.

"I have been here a week now and training’s been quite hard but pre-season is all about getting your fitness right more than getting results, but we have had a hard initial week and I feel quite good now and the lads are looking sharp."

Hills tasted the big time ten years ago when Everton signed him from Blackpool but his time to shine for one of the country's biggest clubs came too soon so he is hoping to take his Owls chance with both hands.

He added: "When I first went to Everton, I was only 17 at the time but I had a good few years there and learnt a lot from Andy Hinchcliffe who went on to play for Wednesday. He was playing for England at the time so he was a hard person to push out of the side but I did make a few games under Joe Royle but when he left I didn’t really see eye to eye with Howard Kendall so I went back to Blackpool to get a bit of first-team experience.

"A couple of years ago I stepped up to the championship with Gillingham but when I found out that Wednesday wanted to sign me I just thought about the size of the club and I was excited about it."

Hills is a versatile player who can operate anywhere on the left, although he knows he will have to fight hard to get a first-team spot with the likes of Brunt and Heckingbottom establishing themselves last season.

Hills said: "I like to go into the tackle but I also like to go forward and support the team to get crosses in and link up on the left-hand side. It worked well against Sheffield FC with Brunty and me. Chris is a great player with a great future and will do good things for this club, it’s just good to join him and be part of that.

"At Gillingham, we had a lot of older players there and it’s the total opposite here because we have some great young players who have good futures ahead of them so hopefully we can keep a hold of them for a long time to come.

"We have competition for places here. At the moment, Hecky’s the first choice left-back and he is a decent player, I have seen him play a few times before and of course Brunty further up the pitch but we have good players in all positions and you need that as a squad. We will get injuries and suspensions without doubt and when that happens, you need someone to come in and do a solid job. The club have got a lot of quality in at the moment so fighting for a shirt will be tough."
