Goalie on turning point - exclusive

Goals from Steve MacLean and Matt Hamshaw gave The Owls a deserved victory against United and the former Preston goalkeeper, making his first appearance at Hillsborough since picking up his injury says that Wednesday's season starts here.

He told Footymad: "I agree that we are underachieving and we are a bit of a soft touch so hopefully we can turn that around gradually but obviously things are not going to happen overnight.

"Against Hartlepool for example, we really dug in and that quality is perhaps something we have lacked in the past and getting that extra yard which gets you those sorts of results."

The fact that Wednesday capitulated against Swindon in the FA Cup does not seem to matter to Lucas, who has an impressive record of seven clean sheets in the 19 games he has played this season - as promotion is the aim.

He added: "The fact that the Swindon game was in the cup and not in the league didn’t put us off our stride. We watched the Swindon video on the Monday or Tuesday after the game and the goals we conceded were just basic, silly things and if you do the right things, which you usually do nine times out of ten you don’t let in those types of goals.

"It was just one of those games in the end where the first two goals could have been stopped if we concentrated a little more.

"If you look at the last two league games we have got six points and two clean sheets and it has given us lots of confidence. I have not really taken much attention to my personal clean sheet record this season but I will pay attention to it at the end of the season when it’s hopefully been good enough to get us promotion."
