Gaffer gutted at Saints loss

A poor defensive display by the whole team frustrated the Owls boss as his team fell to their third successive loss and again failed to take advantage of teams below them slipping up.

Wednesday’s injury-hit side were no real match for the Saints as the home side eased to their first win at home under George Burley and now Sturrock must pick the players up for arguably a more difficult away game at Cardiff this weekend.

He said after the game: “We don’t want to make any excuses about injuries. At the end of the day we had 11 out there, just like Southampton and we just can’t defend like that and expect to win football games.”

But the Scotsman did find some positives to take out of the game: “Sean McAllister was fantastic when he came on, Deon Burton was excellent too,” Sturrock said. “The goalkeeper (Chris Adamson) also did well because he didn’t have a chance with any of the goals.”
