SheffieldWednesday confirmed the sale of defender Tommy Spurr to Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday with the former Owls academy graduate signing a two-year deal at the Keepmoat Stadium for an undisclosed fee.
Being a home-grown player, Spurr was popular with the Hillsborough faithful when he first broke into the team in 2006 and having begun his career as a centre-back he went on to make the left-back spot his own.
The past two seasons have not been his best and playing in a side that has struggled defensively has not helped his confidence. The 23-year-old could never be accused of a lack of effort or commitment but his performances have come in for some criticism during this time. Spurr has been out of favour since Gary Megson became Owls manager and so a move seemed inevitable.
As was highlighted recently in owls-mad’s player review, a fresh start elsewhere could be just what is needed for the player and the club alike.
Speaking on his new clubs official website, www.doncasterrovers.co.uk Spurr stated he knew his services were no longer required at Wednesday and once he had spoken with Sean O’Driscoll a move to the Championship club was a no brainer.
