The results of the Sheffield Wednesday player of the year award, based on votes made by supporters on swfc.co.uk, have been announced and young defender Mark Beevers has scooped the award.
The 18-year-old centre back, playing in his first full season in the side has won many plaudits this season from many different quarters and in what has been a very difficult and largely disappointing season for the Owls, he has been a shining light.
His excellent performances since breaking into the side were recognised at national level last month when he won the Wickes Young Apprentice of the Year Award.
The club has struggled all season long and face a fight to avoid relegation in their last two games but despite this the Owls defensive record is much better than their league position suggests and Beevers has been a key part of this, showing a high level of ability, confidence and decision-making ability that belies his lack of experience.
Although it may be in the player's best interests to continue his progress at Wednesday as he is sure to remain a fixture in the first team based on his performances so far, the club may well face a battle to keep hold of the hot prospect, especially if they do suffer relegation, as a number of Premier League clubs have already been rumoured in the national press to have shown an interest.
