Bullen on referee's decisions - exclusive

Hapless West Midlands referee Andre Marriner has already stirred up controversy in Tranmere’s home clash with Wrexham after the Welsh team’s manager Dennis Smith was sent from the touchline for disputing a free kick decision from which Rovers scored.

Add that to what happened yesterday when Richard Wood made a sound challenge on the touchline, the majority of the crowd claimed a throw for The Owls when suddenly it became a free kick for Tranmere – from which Michael Jackson scored.

But it got worst as Wednesday substitute Zigor Aranalde jumped for a high ball in the Rovers area and clashed with
Jackson and got sent off for elbows – even though both players went up with their arms high but no intentional contact was made by the Spaniard.

Some Owls fans even called for a penalty to be given to the home side – and Paul Sturrock is set to appeal against the dismissal.

Despite the defeat, Wednesday played well with ten men and skipper Bullen was gutted at the final whistle.

“It makes it even more frustrating,” he told Footymad. “We have gone five or six games without playing to our full capacity. I think we bossed the first half and two crucial decisions go against you – five minutes before half time and five minutes after half time.

“For the first incident I don’t know why they linesman has given a free kick when it was a few yards away from him especially when there’s 20,000 people who can see it’s a simple enough challenge, and then obviously the sending off which was like any normal challenge.

“I was five yards away from that and our guy went up for the ball, Ziggy went up with no intention to harm anybody and it was a silly sending off. I wasn’t happy with the decision and with the referee’s body language – I thought he had just given a free kick and that’s it. Until their players saw the card they thought nothing of it but it was a very poor decision.”

More from Lee in the week and also look out for other players commenting on their long absence from the team.
