The winger came off the bench to replace Hull City's Stuart Elliott in Northern Ireland's disappointing 1-1 draw in Malta, a game they nearly lost in the last minute when the home side missed a penalty.
But Brunt knows that now is the time to be making his mark for his country although he also acknowledges that his priority will be at club level.
He told Footymad: "Hopefully if I keep playing well for Wednesday it will bode well for my international career. There’s some big games coming up for Northern Ireland – especially the second game against England in Belfast so hopefully I can be involved in that but at the end of the day I have to do a job with Wednesday, they pay my wages and that’s the main thing for me."
This season, Brunt has been used on both the left and right-hand sides for Wednesday and believes that this will improve his game in the long run.
"It’s fine so far because it gives us a few options down both flanks," he said. "Down the left is obviously my strongest position but I am more than happy to do either side as long as it benefits the team – that’s the main thing.
"So far I have adapted to the jump up in class well, Southampton was disappointing because I don’t think we deserved to have been beaten but at the end of the day we didn’t do enough to get the draw. But overall so far things have gone well for me; I am getting more time on the ball and I get more opportunities to cross the ball into the box."
