Watson has fitted into Wednesday's midfield with ease and looks to be a guaranteed starter for The Owls.
But he can also play in defence and he showed last season what sort of impact he can have at the back - and with Wednesday currently shaky at the back - expect to see Watson's soothing influence there not too soon.
Laws told The Star: "I've been checking on the fitness levels and availability of potential targets and have watched games this week. But if I bring in a player, he's got to be better than what I've already got.
"We know we can use Steve Watson at the back. We might have to put him there. He has a calmness."
With Leon Clarke and Sean McAllister out on loan at Southend and Mansfield respectively, Laws will now look to use the loan market to boost the club's defensive options.
