Goals from Lee Peacock and a deflected effort from Chris Brunt gave The Owls a 3-0 aggregate lead before Bees’ hardman Andy Framton reduced the deficit late on.
But that did not sour Wednesday’s night – outstanding performances from Lee Bullen and Richard Wood helped to see Sturrock’s men through but in all honesty, it is hard to pick fault with any of the players in blue and white last night.
Despite missing a few chances each, both Peacock and James Quinn ran their hearts out, Craig Rocastle and Glenn Whelan won their respective battles in the middle of the park while the full-backs supported the wingers in an all-round terrific display.
The Owls are now heading down to Cardiff for a date with either Tranmere Rovers or Hartlepool United – who take a 2-0 lead into tonight’s game at Prenton Park.
Sturrock said afterwards: “I am very proud and pleased for everyone associated with the club – it has been a hard time over the last 10 years, but we have given the fans something to enjoy again.
“We have got a day out in Cardiff and we have an opportunity to jump up a league and get Wednesday back where it should be. I am also pleased for the chairman Dave Allen who has also had a difficult time with the disappointment among the fan base."
No ticket details are available as of yet but it is expected Wednesday will be allocated around the 30,000 mark for the trip to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday May 29.
It was a long journey back on the coach last night but that did not damper the spirits – just one more game and The Owls are making tracks back toward the big time.
Well done to every player and every single member of the coaching staff – every fan sang their hearts out at Brentford and we all have our fingers crossed that Sturrock can mastermind Wednesday’s promotion!
