Sheffield Wednesday belied their poor away record and mid-table position to put promotion chasing Burnley to the sword at Turf Moor on Saturday.
The Owls got their season off to a flying start with a 4-1 win over the Lancashire side on the opening day of the season and produced a fine attacking display in the return fixture to run out 4-2 winners.
Prior to this game, Wednesday had won only 3 matches on their travels from 17 attempts in the Championship and had scored just 14 times in those matches.
In an open encounter both sides created plenty of chances but it was the Wednesday defence - one of the worst statistically in the country on the road - that coped better, going forward the team played with purpose and on another day might even have scored one or two more.
Brian Laws chose to give Frank Simek a rest after his return from injury last week and so Lewis Buxton returned from suspension at right-back. Captain Richard Wood had to make do with a place on the bench on his return from a knock and Richard Hinds produced another solid performance in partnership with Mark Beevers.
Up front Burnley struggled to cope with the movement and tenacity of Marcus Tudgay, who has notched four goals against them this season and Leon Clarke proved a real handful on his return to the starting line up.
Clarke and Tudgay seem to work well as a partnership and the Owls certainly have more of a presence in the final third when Clarke plays in comparison to Jeffers of late. The former Everton and Arsenal striker has struggled to find any kind of consistent form since returning from injury and may struggle to get win a place in the starting 11 back, especially with Akpo Sodje in line to return to the fray in the near future.
Sean McAllister put in another high tempo display in the middle of the park and Wednesday now seem to have competition for places in all areas of the field, which should keep the players fresh and on their toes as the run in towards the end of the campaign approaches.
